Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

If you hang around our house for any length of time, you will hear things like "did you fill a bucket today?" "are you bucket dipping?"  Some of you may be familiar with the bucket and others may not.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? is a guide to daily happiness for kids written by Carol McCloud.  The bucket filling concept has been used this year at my daughter's school to promote kindness among the children.

As the book explains, everyone carries an invisible bucket around all day long.  As they are being kind (words, actions, smile) their bucket fills up and in turn, they fill other peoples buckets up too (this is being a bucket filler).  If they are not being kind (words, actions, grumpy) their bucket empties and they dip into other peoples buckets (this is being a bucket dipper).  The idea is to be a bucket filler and not a dipper.  Teaching the child that being kind makes them feel good about themselves as well as makes the other person feel good.

It is amazing how teaching the concept of bucket filling has worked with my daughter and the other children in her school.  At four years old, Kaylie can grasp that as she is nice to others, she is filling their bucket and her bucket too.

A copy of the nine time award winning Have You Filled a Bucket Today? can be purchased at Walmart for $12.95.  A portion of the proceeds from the book is being donated to the Salvation Army.

I love what this book has done for my family.  We read it on a regular basis.  Through school we also were given the opportunity to buy Bucket T-shirts.  The children proudly wear them when they are representing the school on field trips and activities.
